Memory lapses are not always what you or your loved one thinks it is! Many adults north of 50 years of age begin to worry about becoming forgetful and fear it may be the first sign of dementia. This presentation is designed to alleviate your fears and to inform you and your family that just because it may take you longer to recall a name or movie, it does not mean you need to be admitted to the “home.” It is perfectly normal as you grow older and wiser to experience memory lapses. This presentation has three purposes: 1) to inform you of the conditions that may be affecting your memory, 2) to inform you of signs that may signal you to seek help, and 3) to review protective measures that will help reduce your risk for dementia.
The eight following conditions are among the non-dementia causes of memory loss to consider:: chronic stress, depression, medications, malfunctioning thyroid, menopause, excessive drinking, head injury, and normal aging changes. These conditions, if not addressed, can create problems you’re your cognitive thinking, especially with regard to retaining new information. Concentration and focus are also affected, impairing your ability to properly store new memories. Rest assured, if you can pretty much carry on your everyday life than you are not experiencing dementia, but rather other explanations.
Everybody’s memory is different, but there are certain signs strongly associated with a problem like dementia. The following five signs of dementia,
- When your memory problems frighten you
- You have changed how you work or play because of memory problems
- Friends and family point out mistakes and express concern
- You notice friends and family starting to cover for you
- You find it hard to make choices, suggest a trip to the doctor or geriatrician
So what can you do to protect yourself from memory loss now? Research has shown that what practices are good for the heart are good for the brain! It is never too late to start exercising, eating a healthy diet, socializing, playing video games, and getting a good night’s sleep!
