ABOUT THE LUNCHEON CHAIRS
Wendy and Ben Moreland are members of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church and longtime Houstonians with two grown daughters, Lindsay (26) and Kelsey (23). Ben and Wendy have made a point to focus their time and efforts on charities that benefit children, education and health.
Wendy has had the privilege to serve on several local boards over the years, including Chairing the Memorial Assistance Ministries Board of Directors in 2018. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Passages for Women, a residential drug and alcohol treatment center. She has also chaired multiple events in the Houston area and has been involved with The Spring Branch Education Foundation, American Heart Association, The Ballet Guild and Spring Branch Independent School District PTA. Wendy earned her degree in Actuarial Science from The University of Texas in Austin and worked in consulting for a number of years before retiring to spend more time with her family.
Ben Moreland is a private investor and retired CEO of Crown Castle, where he remains a member of the Board of Directors. Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI), an S&P 500 company, is a leading provider of wireless infrastructure in the US, owning and operating over 40,000 towers and over 60,000 route miles of fiber nation-wide. Prior to his retirement, Ben served as Executive Vice Chairman from June 2016 through December 2017 and was President and Chief Executive Officer from July 2008 through May 2016. From 2000 through 2008, he was Chief Financial Officer. Ben is an advocate of the community and currently serves on the Board’s of the Hope and Healing Center and Institute, and Houston Methodist Hospital, where he chairs the subsidiary, Methodist Health Centers Board of the community hospitals. Ben holds a BBA from The University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from The University of Houston and is a member of the University of Texas McCombs School of Business Advisory Council and Chancellor’s Council Executive Committee.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Vikram Patel is The Pershing Square Professor of Global Health and Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the Harvard Medical School. His work has focused on the burden of mental disorders, their association with social disadvantage, and the use of community resources for their prevention and treatment.
He holds Honorary Professorships at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, the Public Health Foundation of India, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (where he co-founded the Centre for Global Mental Health in 2008), and is a co-founder of Sangath, an Indian NGO which won the MacArthur Foundation’s International Prize for Creative and Effective Institutions in 2008 and the WHO Public Health Champion of India award in 2016. He is a co-founder of the Movement for Global Mental Health. He is a Fellow of the UK’s Academy of Medical Sciences and has served on several WHO expert and Government of India committees, including the WHO High Level Independent Commission for Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health.
He has been awarded the Chalmers Medal (Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, UK), the Sarnat Medal (US National Academy of Medicine), an Honorary Doctorate from Georgetown University, the Pardes Humanitarian Prize (the Brain & Behaviour Research Foundation), an Honorary OBE from the UK Government and the Posey Leadership Award (Austin College). He was listed in TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential persons of the year in 2015.
