No child should be left to navigate life alone. Adoptions with permanency and foster care for temporary periods of time are loving and life giving endeavors. If foster children are not adopted, they “emancipate” and are left to navigate the world on their own. There can be tragic consequences for these children, and ultimately for the greater community.
Above and beyond the challenges of the process to become an adoptive or foster parent, there is no adoption or foster placement without loss or harm. Children come with deep grief and anger that plays out in their daily lives and relationships. The loving and nurturing relationships they need to heal take compassion, resolve, courage, and perseverance.
